Germany (Summer I)
Economics & International Business
June 6 – July 9, 2024
In this program students will complement the academic program with the personal experiences they will gain by living in Freiburg. Students will visit local businesses, receive lectures and engage in discussions with local experts and take part in cultural events in the city as well as in neighboring countries such as Switzerland and France. UT Economics faculty provide the academic background throughout the program that will include applications that emphasize and enlighten the management, sustainability and international business decisions students will witness throughout the program.

Costa Rica
First-Year Experience
January 6 – 13, 2024
This will be a highly experiential study abroad program in which a small group of first-year University of Tennessee, Haslam College of Business students will have the opportunity to visit and interact with a variety of businesses and leaders throughout Costa Rica, where tourism, technology, and agriculture are key economic drivers. Through site visits, lectures, group discussions, and cultural activities, students will learn about contemporary business, government, and economic development issues in Costa Rica while also exploring the “Pura Vida” culture, history, food, and natural environment of this beautiful Central American country. Students will receive an introduction to business in Central America and learn about the role of sustainable development from both a business and environmental standpoint.

Cuba
First-Year Experience
January 5 – 12, 2024
This will be a highly experiential study abroad program in which a small group of first-year University of Tennessee, Haslam College of Business students will have the opportunity to visit and interact with a variety of businesses and leaders throughout Cuba, where tourism, technology, and agriculture are key economic drivers. We will take advantage of this historic moment to explore Cuba’s changing entrepreneurial and international business environment. Along the way, students will have ample opportunity to dive into Cuba’s rich and diverse culture, including its music, art, and dance. This program will be based in the heart of the famed Cuban capital of Havana, steps from the University of Havana.

International Business

This course presents students with the unique and timely opportunity to learn about business practices within Portugal and the European Union. As a rising technology and start-up center of Europe, Portugal has focused on attracting new firms and workers to contribute to their quickly growing economy. Through site visits at local and multinational corporations within Portugal, students will understand how business operates and experience the beauty and charm of Portugal.

International Business

This course provides students with an opportunity to learn first-hand about Germany’s advanced, innovation-driven business environment and unique culture. The course combines classroom learning, site visits, and cultural immersion activities to provide a multi-faceted understanding of German business. Students will observe first-hand the German perspective on manufacturing, supply chain, technological development, and sustainability by engaging with leading German firms, all while considering the cultural and behavioral nuances that lead to successful engagement with German businesses.

Iceland
International Marketing
May 18 – 28, 2024
Students will be introduced to international marketing and business in Reykjavik, Iceland. In the world’s most northern capital, students will explore topics such as the consequences of over-tourism and Iceland’s pathway to geothermal energy, with an emphasis on marketing. Iceland, with its striking landscapes, will serve as a stunning backdrop to which students can apply classroom theory to practice through business site visits and cultural excisions.

International Business

This course prepares future managers for the challenges of competing in the global marketplace, in particular conducting business in Latin America. Students will gain tools and knowledge useful for understanding the business and competitive environment as well as the unique managerial challenges of firms operating in the region. Students will be able to recognize both the potential and limitations for international trade and investment in the region and appreciate its distinct business practices.

Global Supply Chain Operations
January 7 – 20, 2024
Students will gain an understanding of logistics systems operations and tactics. The course emphasizes front line decision making in: purchasing, manufacturing, transportation, warehousing, distribution center operations and human resources. The decision areas are explored within a global supply chain perspective, including the current impact and future trends connected to the Panama Canal and global trade.

South Africa
Nonprofit, Social, and Micro Enterprises
May 18 – 28, 2024
Students have the opportunity to explore local businesses and nonprofits, while experiencing first-hand how culture and government have contributed to the internationalization of businesses in South Africa. South Africa is one of the most ethnically, linguistically and religiously diverse countries on the continent. With the South African constitution recognizing 11 official languages, the country has been affectionately dubbed the “Rainbow Nation” since the fall of Apartheid.

Global Strategic Management

In this capstone experience, students combine and apply content from prior coursework to the management of complex organizations in a world economy while exploring England’s capital. The course builds on a traditional strategic management foundation. Through lectures, site visits and experiential learning exercises, students receive an understanding of integrated business decisions as they relate to the performance of organizations.

This course focuses on developing tactical plans in support of a firm’s supply chain strategies and highlighting how to integrate these plans into a unified and coordinated supply chain system. Students learn concepts and models important in supply chain planning with emphasis on key financial and operational tradeoffs.

International Business

This course will explore Italy’s diversified economy through the lens of their prominent food, automotive, fashion and tourism sectors. Students will participate in a unique learning experience that will consider trade, foreign direct investment and competitive dynamics, while fully immersing themselves in a context that is profoundly different from the United States. Students will visit several northern Italian businesses and interact with local managers to gain an intimate understanding of the distinct institutional, political and cultural differences in this beautiful country.

Introducing the new International Business major
The International Business (IB) major equips students with functional skills that enhance their effectiveness as business professionals. The IB major accompanies a second Haslam major and prepares students for international careers in various business fields.
Program Options
Internationalize your business degree by joining one of our program options. The No Passport Program or one of our faculty-directed programs led by Haslam faculty.
Semester-Length Programs
Semester-length programs are among the most immersive type of study abroad experience. For an entire Fall or Spring semester, students can choose to study abroad with an affiliate, exchange, or direct enroll program. Courses taken abroad can be transferred back into a students’ UT degree. It is important for business students to schedule a study abroad advising appointment with an IPSA staff member to find the program and coursework that best meets their degree needs.

Students studying abroad for a semester are required to submit a Request for Transfer Credit Form as part of their pre-departure application. Forms, with course syllabi, can be submitted to the Center for Student Engagement & Success for review and approval.

Financial considerations play a key role in the decision to study abroad. We want to help students achieve their ideal experiences and understand finding the right mix of location, programming and cost is essential.
International Internships
Business students also have the opportunity to intern abroad. Through internship programs, students can gain practical work experience while also adding depth to their professional development through academic coursework. Students can earn 3-6 credit hours towards their degree through a variety of internship locations and placements.
